The "I need your help" giveaway.

I know it seems selfish, but this is really for the greater good of all of us. You see, I've been taking a look at my tags lately and wondering if they are really helpful. Do you find everything you need? What I'm asking for this week is to take a peek at my tags on the left hand side and tell me if you've ever used them, if you would, and if I'm missing something big. Since you are so helpful, I'm giving away FIVE starter packs this week!!!! I'm shameless, really. I do promise to use this information to revise my tags, thus helping us all. Right?

Remember:

1. Comment on THIS blog entry. Read the paragraph above - five winners this week!
2. Only one entry per person.
3. Contest will close every Wednesday at midnight (EST).
4. PLEASE leave your e-mail address if it's not attached in Blogger - I need some way to reach you.

Last week most of you said you still love owls, woodland creatures, turquoise and then birds/birdcages/birds in trees. I love it! That was so fun. Last week's winner was Kim.

I would do anything for that Mod Podge! Whoooo Boy!
I love your tags, and I have used them. The only thing that sticks out to me (because I'm a freak) is that a few of them aren't capitalized. Other than that - super awesome and your blog rocks as much as Mod Podge.

Mod Podge Amy: I do believe your tags help me greatly! Perhaps other fb members will have suggestions to streamline the information/site for easier access and quicker usage, but it's A-OK w/me. Thanks for your help.

I think your tags are pretty well rounded. For my blog I use my tags to see what I am writing about so if I am covering something a lot I can remind myself to talk about something else for a while :) I use your tags to find projects though, very helpful in general!

SmilynStef said...

I'm new to the blog, so I haven't used them yet. Card Making is a tag I'd like to see.

Randi said...

Yes I love the tags. Some of the categories that have tons of posts(gift ideas, just for fun etc) might be too much to scroll through though.

Melanie said...

I'm first? Means I won't win! I don't use tags. Ever. Well, unless there is no way to search the blog any other way. I'm a rebel that way. LOL

I think your tags are fine. Although, I haven't used them. A lot of times I'll used your linked within posts and revisit older posts that way.

I've used your tags several times - it's great if you're looking for something specific, although I think I've now gone back through all of your archives, just enjoying all the inspiration!

I like your tags however, I would like to see some of the bigger catagories broken down a little bit - maybe sub tags?

I have not used the tags before but I am fairly new to this site. I do use them on other blogs...usually I use them because I just HAVE to find something and it helps me narrow down where it could be.

Wow, am I first?!?! :) WOOHOO :)

I really like your tags/links on the sidebar...but have to admit I rarely get to click on em...I usually follow the links you blog about, though, and that has led me to some AWESOME places :)

That starter kit is awesome!! :)

I haven't used the tags yet but I would defiantly use them in the future if looking for anything specific. The only suggestion, is maybe to be more specific with the holiday tag, especially if you have a lot of some holidays.

I love tags, and yes, I think yours are useful. HOWEVER. If I'm being totally honest, the only ones I ever use on most blogs is the "tutorial" one. That's just how I roll. But yeah, I think yours are good! You might consider headers or buttons for the ones people use the most.

Kelli @ RTSM said...

I have used your tags before, but I can't remember which ones. I actually think you have then pretty well organized and you seem to have covered almost everything:)

Jenn said...

I think your tags are nice and specific. Maybe a little overwhelming but I think that is better than not being able to tell where to go to look for something. I also like that you have a search feature on your blog.

jvanchiere@yahoo.com

Amanda and Jonathan Brantley said...

Hmmm. I looked really hard at them. : ) And came to two conclusions.

#1. You have a kids tag, but the projects are kid themed, and not necessarily kid-friendly. Maybe you could have a tag that is for kid crafts that they could make?

2. Also, you have a "holidays tag", but also have random holidays listed...thanksgiving, halloween, etc. Would it be better to have just "holidays" listed, or list every specific holiday??

PS I love the budget crafting and tutorial tags!

Love this blog. WOuld you believe I just used mod podge for the first time this past year? I made fabric covered lightswitch & outlet covers for my lil girl's nursery...now I'm addicted. I've made a few canvases so far.

I'd LOVE to win the starter pack, OH MY GOODNESS! I didn't even know it came in a sparkly glitter form.

I missed last week because I was away, but I have loved hedgehogs for years, but I have recently started to love owls.

I haven't actually used your tags yet. I read you through my feed reader and I bookmark entries I like. I have now looked at your tags and I think they look good. I especially like that you have tags for different kinds of Mod Podge.

I am seemingly the first commenter, so I am not holding out hope of getting picked this week.

Amy, yes I've used the tags on the side of your blog to find specific items.

Is there a way to break down the projects category? It's just a thought because I was thinking of Steampunk projects, but I'd have to scroll through all of the projects to see if I could find any Steampunk projects.

Adrie said...

Hi! If by tags you mean the project category titles, then yes I use them! If tags are something else, I have NO idea what they are as i'm still getting use to all the blogger lingo. Either way, LOVE this site and have really been into Mod Podge lately. YAY!

CreateInYourJammies said...

Hi there! Yes, I use the tags on the left. It's helpful, because I can scan down the list and see what I've missed or if I am looking for a project I can find it pretty easy.

I just found your site via The Crafty Crow I think. It looks great and I can't wait to try some things. Since I haven't been here before I can't say that I've used the tags. I see that there is one titled kids, but is it projects that are for kids to do or kid stuff? How about a tag for a quickie project?

Can't wait to check it all out!

Ashley @ Ashley's Craft Corner said...

I think your tags are just fine! I've found them easy to navigate through in the past.
My only suggestion for improvement would be that you have a consistent time/place for announcing the winner of the previous week's Mod Podge Starter Set giveaways. It seems like the last few weeks you have announced it on Sundays in the new giveaway, but it hasn't always been like this...so I always feel like I'm going to miss it.
Although, it keeps me checking your blog regularly (not that I didn't do that anyway)...is this some kind of evil plot??? :)

I think you can maybe condense the tags some. a few overlap others making it hard to find different stuff. so maybe group all the holidays into one, and then have personal style or something like for fashion, jewelry and such and also do the same for home decor...seems you have lots of tags for that.

At times I miss your tags as I'm used to reading them on the "right" side of blogs.... that's my input...hope I win!

ForfeitReality said...

I've only ever used the "furniture", "home decor", "jewelry", and other tags that indicate what the final product is - that's just my preference though. The "tutorial", "projects", "projects by me", and "project of the week" tags seem a bit ambiguous?

Honestly, I haven't used your tags. I'm more of a search engine person! But if I have to make a suggestion :) ...

There are A LOT of tags; maybe try eliminating a few that don't really explain the topic of the post. Like Project of the Week, Projects, Projects by Me, and Video. For me, those don't seem like tags that would be overly used. If I'm clicking a tag, chances are it's for something more specific, like Jewelry or Outdoor Mod Podge.

I hope that makes sense! Do I get a prize for the most long winded response? :)

I've never used your tags before, but if I were to use them, here's how I would do it. Since I (seriously here) think of you as the Mod Podge expert, when I came across a new project that I wasn't sure about (and that's quite a bit as I'm a beginner), I would come here looking for advice on how to do it or information on if I've got the right kind of Podge (which is where the starter kit would come in VERY helpful, you see!). So I'd want to be able to come here and say, "hm, I want to podge over my boring kitchen timer... I'm sure that will need to be wipe-able, what type should I use? What other tips to make it actually functional? How should I cut around the oddly shaped base?" I don't know exactly what advice to give you, but if your tags were able to guide me to the answers to my questions, that's how they would most help me. :)

That might not have even been helpful at all. Oh well, I gave it a go! :)

I like the array of your tags, but I agree that I'd rather see a consistency to capitalization. Also, the "Accessories" one seems vague. I look for "Tutorials" and "Tips" a lot. I generally read the blog posts chronologically, but it's nice to have them organized for later reference. It would be nice if Blogger would add a sub-categories option, but I know there's nothing you can do about that. I really like having the tags as well as search box - sometimes I like to browse, sometimes I want something specific.

In terms of sheer usability, I think that for most blogs, the tags are the most efficient way of navigating the site when looking for specific information-you can locate the articles you want under general enough titles, such as "Tutorial" when you just want to see the types of project you can steer us through, but specific enough for particular things that users might be searching for, such as "Furniture". I suppose that my only criticisms could be that
1. (I am not especially anally-retentive, but I just thought I would point this out) You seem to capitalize most of the tags, and I wondered if there was a specific reason for not doing so on
artist trading cards, holidays, jewelry, and tips...
2. If you wanted to tighten them up, you could do away with tags such as "contests" and "givaways" and group them under one title, or instead of "fashion and accessories" or being separate, put them under a main banner as well. Just whatever you think would steer people to what they want to know about.
3. Some are a little bit TOO general, such as "lifestyle"- I have NO idea what kind of information that contains- or tips- generally I don't look for tips on something unless it's under a more specific tag, like "crochet". I don't want to get too wordy and take up too much space here, but I love your site, but strangely enough I have never used Modge Podge itself and would love to be entered so I have a chance to start- fo' free!
Thanks so much.

I'm a little bit embarassed, but the only tag I've used is the Giveaway tag...
I must admit I don't fancy capital letters in your tags and maybe they're a little too general and formal so they weren't attractive enough to use them...
It would be much more fun if they were more specific and given categories with interesting names...
That way they would instantly be more useful and more used ;)

Sorry, I'm not gonna be much help but I've used your tags alot and haven't had any trouble finding anything!

When I first found your fabulous blog, it took some time to read the content on all the tags. What a treasure trove of ideas! Now I have two loves: polymer clay AND decoupage! Maybe you could start a tag about decoupaging polymer clay? ANyhoo..I think your blog is perfect and I wouldn't change a thing. I would like to win a sample pack as I have been unable to find varieties of Mod Podge in crafts stores and would like to try the fabric Mod Podge.
Rock on, Amy!

I haven't used your tags yet, as I haven't had the time to go back and explore much. But on first glance, they seem to be in good order.

PrairiePeasant said...

I think your tags are good. I would separate some things like "paper crafting" into cards/books...whatever else. Also the ones like "just for fun" and "modge podge mania" are probably only useful for you, and I wouldn't do anything about them, as long as the posts in those subheadings have other categories where they can be found.

I have used the tags and find them very helpful - especially as a new blogger!

I love using the tags to get to a category that I want. Please don't get rid of them. :)

I love blogs that have tags! My favorites are Tutorials, How-To's, and Tips. I'm a dabbler, and am always looking for ways to improve my crafting methods. I love Mod Podge, but I always keep running into various setbacks that make me wish I really knew what I was doing, lol. When I see a new project I think, "Wow, that's awesome! How did they get it to come out looking so professional??"

I will occasionally scroll through generic categories for Projects, but more often I'm looking for something specific, e.g. Fabric ModPodge, Paper, Furniture, Jewelry, Kid-friendly crafts, etc., which you've done a pretty good job of.

Mostly I just follow your new posts, which I always enjoy. :o)

I use tags on blogs such as this (ie crafty, decorating, etc) and yours are broken down pretty well. I think have a tage for each season would be nice.

Courtney Paige said...

Your blog is such an inspiration to me and my friends. We decoupage in hopes of making something "Mod Podge Rocks" worthy. I check your blog daily and whenever I'm feeling crafty it's the first place I go for ideas. Your tags are extremely helpful, considering the magnitude of projects you have listed I don't know how I'd find anything without them. I love how organized your layout and links are. The only thing I would change, and it's just because I'm a little obsessive/compulsive (as a few others have stated above), is the fact that not all the links' first letters are capitalized.

Thank you for your blog and for the time you put into it. You're such an inspiration to us fellow crafters.

Hi Amy! I am new to blogging and my new obsession started with your site! I have used all of your tags, sometimes more than once. I have found a world of fantabulous crafters and ideas from your gateway. Since I am not the most computer savvy, I think your tags are very easy especially since you title recent projects. I check my Mod Podge Digest everyday! I am trying to re-vamp a chest....what would Amy do?

Michelle said...

I have not used your tags before (I mostly read through a RSS feeder). However, they seem to be useful categories and would help to narrow down the search for a specific project.

I have looked at your tags when looking for a project to decorate for a certain holiday. You have the lump sum holiday category, but I do wish you had smaller specific holiday categories, too (i.e. Valentine's, St. Patty's, 4th of July).

My only suggestion would be to address the holiday tag issue. You have a general holiday tag but then you have most holidays separately too.

I've used the tags before. The only things I might add would be categories for each individual kind of mod podge. these featuring projects, info and general info about each type. That way if a person doesn't know what kind to buy or has a bottle they aren't sure what to do with they can find ideas specifically for that type.

Love the blog. Love the tags. Love the Podge. Love!

I use tags all the time, especially when arriving at a new blog to quickly scan projects. The only thing I can suggest is condensing all of your holiday stuff under a "holiday" tag or even "seasonal" that way you can eliminate a bunch of categories. There is an awful lot to read through, but most crafters are happy to peruse I'm thinking!

i definitely use the tags! i love it when craft blogs have them and it drives me nuts when they don't!

This makes it so easy to find exactly what you want and you can skip over the ones that you know you won't want to do (i.e. kids if you don't have kids or halloween if you don't decorate for that holiday, etc.)

The only ones I can think of, and I don't even know if you have any projects that fit under these categories, but if you do:

Sewing
Valentines Day

Other than that...i think you've got it covered!

I have used the tags, but sometimes I can't find what I'm looking for (maybe I'm just looking for oddball things?). It would be great to have a "beginner" tag for projects that people could do literally the first time they try Mod Podge. I know how easy it is, and you do too, but I refer a lot of friends to your site and some of the projects are intimidating (furniture, etc.). It would great to have a "Start Here" or "Super Easy for Beginners" section.

Melanie said...

I don't use tags very often, but your list does looks pretty comprehensive. I might have to start taking a peak now.

I think your tags are pretty well-rounded. I rarely use them since I tend to read your blog in my Outlook through the RSS feed, but if I was looking for something on the blog in particular, it looks like I could find what I needed. I do think some of the categories are a bit huge (100+ posts) but it also look like you use more than one tag, so it may be easy enough.

Tags are so helpful when I remember something from your blog, but don't recall exactly when . . . I scan the tags and zero in. I also like reading through a topic at a time, kinda like when I browse through old magazines organized by seasons.

PDCScarbroughpage said...

I definately love the tags, because there is such a great variety of titles. I love kids, organization, and party stuff!

I think your tags are fine. You have a lot, but having that many categories really makes it easier to find what one is looking for. And thank you again, not only for the chance to win, but all the great ideas you share!

Franny Z said...

I usually read blogs on my iTouch while nursing and don't have an opportunity to browse your webpage. But I did look at the tags and I think that you have a covered everything pretty well! However, I would be intimidated by the categories with too many posts (e.g. 100-300) Is it possible to make subcategories? That would be helpful :-)
Thanks for the fun giveaways and taking the time to poll your readers!

Jessica said...

I've never used your tags because I primarily read your posts through RSS feed in my google reader

paperpapier said...

never use your tags...they are too many..maybe re-categorize them under 'technique' (decoupage..), 'material type' (ie for used on glass, fabric, paper, plastic, wood etc), 'altered project', 'indoor', 'outdoor'...
hope that helps...
